Completing My Paper

In the writing lab Friday my group had a lot accomplished. I want to thank Terrence and Danielle, and the writing teacher Josh for all their help. The first thing I want to say was that I thought I went into the lab with a good paper kind of but of course came out with some negatives and positives. I had recieved some clear ideas on how I should elongate my paper and make it even better. One thing our group came apart of is that I had more solutions than the problem and I was stating my opinion and not looking on the other side the fence I mean people that think different. I want to know do I really have to state the other side of the fence, but to make my paper long I think so. Anyways, I think my paper is coming along well.

The Last Paper

This last paper is a rough one. It requires a lot of research and reading. If I had of known this paper would come from the topic of the paper before I would have done something less stressing.

problems for hippies

Because the hippies are now older they face some consequences that reflect on their counterculture ways that they partook in the 70's. Because of protests, rebellion, and the idea of the hippie communes a lot of them dropped out of school. Therefore, many of them now dont have the education to get a good job. There in itself lies a problem. If anyone has any more ideas about what some problems are in the hippie community please let me know.

My Paper

For my paper I've decided to go with animal rights. A lot of Buddhist tend to be vegetarians, so I'm going to consecrate on how farmers keep the conditions for the animals that are going to be slaughter extremely poor. I'm also going to incorporate that these farmer's should be punished if the conditions aren't what they are suppose to be.

Writing my paper

So i have decided i am going to take the problem of weed being illegal and show the potential benefits about the legalization of the herb. I will be using a wide variety of areas that it would benefit. Some of those areas include the medical field, the government, the economy, and the criminal justice system. If anyone else can think of any other possible benefits please let me know. Also i am missing a lot of journals, if any of you have been keeping up with the journals could we meet up so i can get the journals i am missing so i can make them up. Thanks

Can a Buddhist be a problem?

For my discourse community I research Zen Buddhism. While studying and participating in the ceremony I seriously found no flaws in this practice. Zen means "to mediate". How can meditating be a bad thing? They were not extremists, so I can't say that their practiced interrupted their daily life. Also, how can people who are all about peace and unity between nature and themselves be a problem to others? A you guys can see I'm having a tough time trying to found problems in this practice.

Problems and Benefits of Smoking Cannabis

Ok so i have a few problems associated with the herb marijuana. First problem is that it is illegal therefore the drug can be made anyway possible, being mixed with other harmful drugs. But if it was regulated by the gov. they could control the amount of THC that was in it. There are a few medical benefits associated with the herb, and there is extensive research about what happens when smoked. There are also many benefits including economy benefits, and jail congestion would be lessened if the herb was legal.

We All Have Issues

For one of your blog entries this week, I would like you to post a short list of possible issues or problems associated with your discourse community. What issue or problem do you think you'll address in your proposal assignment? Why?

My essay is done, and I revised it again just to make sure everything is where it should be. I made sure I made the connection of the book The Dharma Bums, and the connection it has with buddhism early on. If anyone would like to read it just let me know, and I'll email it you.

Behind the Scenes For High School Football

I think my paper is coming along quite well. I think it sucks that I just found out that we have to cite at the last minute. So now I have to go back in and cite a couple of things. I also feel that this written artifact is kicking my ass. My problem is how to put it in the paper when the artifact can be way off subject on what you writing about. I mean football headlines dont really explain in a way its a discourse community. I mean do any of my classmates know how to put it in the paper because I don't. Hit me up!!!

Wednesday, March 24, 2010

I am currently working on my paper, i feel like it is coming along well. I may need some people to help me revise it so i can fluff it up for Beth! If any of you are interested in helping me out comment and tell me and ill email you my paper! thanks

Buddhist Temple

Yesterday I went to the Buddhist temple finally. It was completely different from what I thought i would be like. It was a lot of meditating and just focusing on your breathing. It was an awesome experience, and i am glad i decided to do this project on Zen Buddhism.

Project

For the next project I am going to do my discourse community on my high school, Slidell High School, football team. I chose to do this because I know a lot of people that was apart of that community. Also this community there was no way I can be apart of it because it is for only males. I know a little about football but i know they have more abbreviations and words that I dont know and would like to learn about it because in my future i want to have fun with my husband.

On project number five we have to find someone in a discourse community. I think I should interview someone im not really familiar with like a theatre student because I dont know anything about theatre. What questions can I ask to put into my paper?

The Problem With My Paper

The only problem with my paper was the way I wanted to tell my story. It was easy to find connection from the interview to the main story that I got from the person i interviewed. It was just difficult because I didn't want it to seem like he was telling the story.

Revision

I think that work shopping is really a big help to me in revising my paper. It gives me another point of view of my paper instead of my own. I found that in this paper i needed to revise more on details in my draft.

Revision

I think that Eng 100E focuses on revision so much because that is where most people have a problem. The more you practice, the more ready you will be to do what is expected of you in Eng 102 and in there you will not have this much time to get the revisions done. I personally like workshopping and wish I was physically there to do it. When you look at your paper, your looking at it so much that the mistakes just blend in and need a fresh set of eyes to point out somethings that need changing/fixing. Thank God for snow days! My paper wasn't quite where I want it to be...probably still won't but extra time always helps. Good luck class!

Revision

I started my revision as soon as I completed my first draft. My first draft yall was so horrible I didn't know what questions to ask or nothing. As we sat in class and talked about different things and different questions my mind started lingering. I mean my questions were just popping up in my head. Soon after I had the interview then started on my second draft. My second draft came out much better than the first but still needed work. After the super bowl I put on my thinking cap and came out with a pretty good draft. For my final draft I just need to revise it one more time before I turn it in.

Survey Talk

Today was survey day. The whole class went to take the survey to give people a chance to see if they should keep the expanded class. My opinion was that I think the expanded course is a good class to take to prepare you for the REAL english in college. While doing this survey I had a few thoughts running through my mind. Some of the thoughts were is the people really going to base their opinion of what we say. I mean if they are how???I was also wondering that would it be fair for us to be a semester behind in English and others on track because we were used as pigs, so I think we should keep the class.
Does all of these surveys have a cause? Do they not take our word the first we fill out one? i do not think our minds have change this soon. what do you all think about it?

Monday, February 8, 2010

The hardest thing to me about a paper is just starting it. Once i get started i can usually finish it up and at first it might not be very strong but thats where a draft and revision comes into play. To me revising my paper is very helpful, it's not the funniest thing in the world but it's very helpful. Workshopping with a partner is very helpful to me mainly because they give me feed back and tell me where i could go with my paper, how to improve it on the weaker portions, and find all my little grammar mistakes. Also being able to read theirs and seeing where they are coming from and what direction they went with theirs and sometimes even maybe get ideas to make yours better. I personally think workshopping and revising is a very positive thing because it can only make your paper stronger.

Revision

I begin to start my revision process right after I type my essay. I usually don't write a a rough draft, and I just start typing. I usually re-read what I just wrote, and start from there. I'll add some things, or I'll start to take things out that i don't think are needed. I usually then print my draft out, and set it aside for a day or two, just to give myself a brake. When we have our workshops in class, that's when i really pay attention to what my partner thinks, and what Beth thinks. From there I take their advice and continue on writing my essay. I'm not the biggest fan of workshopping, but I know that it is beneifical to everyone.

Revision, Revision, Revision

So this week, as you work to revise and polish your profile papers, I would like you to think about your revision process. How do you begin revising? What role does workshop play in your revision process? What, in your eyes, in the most important thing to keep in mind as you revise? Why do you think we spend so much time on revision in Eng. 101-E?
Please reflect on these questions in one of your posts this week.

WATCHING THE SUPER BOWL AND WRITING MY PAPER

I am watching this Super Bowl game and writing my paper. Then all of a sudden I look down and see that i rearranged my entire paper. When I was filling in paragraphs I rearrange everything. It took me all night to get my paper right. What would you had of done: write a new paper, or play unscramble the essay?

WATCHING THE SUPER BOWL AND WRITING A PAPER

Watching the Super Bowl and writing my paper was a extremely hard task. After rescheduling my appointment twice I thought I would be in this situation. I could not start my paper until after my interview. I did not want to make up something for the paper. What would you all had of done?

Recording your interview

I found this to be the best method because I was able to be more relaxed and free while talking to my interviewee. Which in turn made her more comfortable and open seeing that i was spending more time focusing on her than trying to write everything out while she was talking. Another perk to recording is you never have the possibility of a mis quote because it is recorded. Hope everyone is doing well on their papers!

Interviewing Essay

I had my interview the other night, and it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. I had my questions written in advance, and all the questions I made sure I got more then yes and no. Going to the speech center really helped me. There were many tips that helped me and I hope your essay's are going well as well!

Interviewing

I have finally started my paper, and I just finished my interview today and I agreed with Tiffany on her post that it was way more successful if your questions are planned out, I have done an interview before where I had no clue where it was going but knowing and being prepared made my interview ten times better and I was more comfortable with a relaxing environment. I think the speech center helped me out tremendously with the interview just by sitting in there and listing to what she had to say.

Sketch Thoughts and Questions

The person I'm profiling is my mother. I chose her because she is a workaholic, a mother, and the position she withelds there are certain things she cant do. I think she is the right person for me to interview because not only she is a good person to profile but she does the job I want to do in the future. I also feel like there are some things I would like to know outside of the mother-daughter relationship we have.
Some examples of the questions I plan on asking her is: Why does she work the way she do besides to pay the bills? How do you manage your time between your free time and work?, etc.

Thoughts on interview

I think most of all, you need to write out a game plan on what type questions you want to ask because that will be the key to a successful interview. You need that organization in the Q & A phase so that the person you are interviewing will be able to give you the information you can use and use effectively. (I feel easier said than done but anyways) In Eng099 we had to interview someone in our chosen career and I didn't have the proper questions so therefore he didn't respond well and my paper was sort of a disaster....Good luck to all!

How to Ensure a Successful Interview

So we've talked a lot about the types of questions you should ask the person you're interviewing, and at the Speaking Center presentation today you learned about a number of things that are important to consider when you're conducting an interview. In your own words, what must a person do to ensure a successful interviewing experience? Comment on this post with your thoughts.

1/25/10 Homework Reading

I really liked the Soup profile. I could really visualize this hard ass dude running this perfection of a place. I couldn't imagine having that many choices of soup so I would be like that last lady trying to make up my mind and then get kicked out. Overall though this one was great. The Dr. Daedalus, however, I felt was not as effective. It seemed to long and drawn out and I really lost focus in it. After reading it, I was like ok what was is it even about.

ThumbSucking Girl

I personally liked the way the author used so much detail but it wasn't a long eassy. To me it when i read it, i had an image of the story in my head the whole time. Sometimes reading longer essay might bore me, but this one was intresting because of all the little details. It described how they were in the car, when they could have been living from it. But you dont know for sure you just asume from the outside looking in. Most little children have to have some type of security blanket and this childs was sucking her thumb. It could have been a blanket or evey a stuffed animal. Children might grow up and still depend on that one "security blanket" to make them feel safe when they feel harmed.

Thumbsucking Girl

I felt that the author did a really good job capturing what the little girl felt and feels. The author is able to connect the thumb sucking to safety and security, something at almost every child did when they were little. The author makes it obvious to us that she doesn't have a lot of personal items in her life, almost as she's living out of the family car, however she does not care about anything else but her thumb. For such a short story the author did something that not every author can be, she captured the little girl's perspective.

Thumb sucking girl

This is my thoughts on the Thumb Sucking Girl Homework. I felt this brief essay was very effective with all the details the author wrote. It was extremely descriptive but not overpowering. It sounds like the child knew better because of a certain sentence that talks about the child not sucking her thumb for a month to show she could. My children never sucked their thumbs so it is hard to imagine, before reading this essay, how it is a comforting thing to kids. Seems difficult to write this way....I thought it was beautifully written.
